Michigan Moment: Rainbow at Dawn

Lake Superior near the Keweenaw Peninsula

Stacy Niedzwiecki says of this image, “This photo was part of the final series of my 2010 ArtPrize entry – Great Lakes – Great Ships – Great Concerns: http://stacyn.com/artprize

While traveling on the S/V Denis Sullivan in July of 2010, I asked the crew for a wake-up call so I could see the sunrise (which was very good one). But even better still – a rainbow suddenly appeared! It only lasted for  a minute or so. The glimpse of this rare site was completely worth the lack of sleep.

This was captured on Lake Superior just as we were about to enter the Portage Lake area on the Keweenaw Peninsula. The sun was struggling through low clouds and a bit of fog and mist – the rainbow glowed almost pure red! www.atoptics.co.uk/rainbows/redbow.htm.

“Rainbow at night, shepherd’s delight;
Rainbow in morning, shepherds take warning,
“If there be a rainbow in the eve, It will rain and leave;
But if there be a rainbow in the morrow,
It will neither lend nor borrow”,
Rainbow to windward, foul fall the day;
Rainbow to leeward, damp runs away.”
