A common loon (Gavia immer) and chicks photographed in Lake County, Michigan by John Dykstra. Loons require undisturbed habitat, and are very sensitive to human activity while nesting or rearing young. Hatched chicks can swim almost immediately, although for the first two weeks, they may catch a ride on their parents’ backs. For more on loons, visit the Michigan DNR.
