Piney Ridge Road at Ludington State Park

“Hustling from Scottville, Michigan to the Ludington State Park to photograph the sunset, I made a last minute decision to not shoot right along the shoreline of Lake Michigan, and instead, turned down Piney Ridge Road to try and shoot from a location that my dad had discovered during Week 6 of “Tuesdays with Todd and Brad Reed”. Once I got on top of the massive dune, I knew I had made the right decision.” – photographer Brad Reed.

Michigan Moment: Tahquamenon Falls Up Close

Tahquamenon Falls is one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. From its spring source north of McMillan, it meanders 94 miles before emptying into Whitefish Bay. The amber color of the water is caused by tannin leached from the cedar, spruce and hemlock in the swamps drained by the river. This photo by Brad Reed offers a more intimate view of the very popular tourist destination.

“When I first came upon this scene I quickly noticed an orange leaf stuck in the tired-looking snow fence. I frantically tried to make a good close up photograph of the leaf while the magic light was still hitting it. After getting frustrated and stepping back from the scene, I noticed the repetitive patterns and leading lines that the sand and snowfence made together. I recomposed the photograph and made the leaf an added ingredient. Little did I know that a few hours later I would be back out at the park photographing the Northern Lights.” – photographer Brad Reed.

Much of the snow that was still on the ground looked dirty and uninviting. That forced us to look deeper for good photographic moments.
